School: Gourmet Guru Academy

Gourmet Guru Academy began as a social business initiative between Nanyang Technological University’s Students in Free Enterprise (NTU SIFE) and PPIS Family Service Centre (PPIS FSC) – West. We aim to empower self-taught chefs like housewives earn an income. Through the publication of cookbooks and our weekly cooking classes to members of the public, these housewives are learning new skills while providing for themselves and their families.
Gourmet Guru Academy’s cooking classes focus on the preservation of Singapore’s culinary heritage. For generations, many traditional recipes were handed down through the families. Without a conscious effort to preserve them, they will be lost amidst the commercialization and standardization within the food industry. Food also plays an integral role in our lives even though as it provides opportunities to bond with our loved ones through the act of sharing a meal together, or even cooking together. Therefore, Gourmet Guru Academy strives to collect authentic recipes, and at the same time encourage family bonding and healthy eating through our classes.
